What happened

Peer-to-peer lender Prosper said it detected unauthorized access on September 2, 2025 and that attackers stole data about customers and loan applicants, including Social Security numbers. Have I Been Pwned later counted 17.6 million unique emails, with names, birth dates, government IDs, addresses, income and employment data in the set. Prosper said accounts and funds were not accessed and offered free credit monitoring.

What should I do?

  1. Freeze your credit for free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion so no one can open new accounts in your name.
  2. Request an IRS Identity Protection PIN so nobody can file a tax return with your Social Security number.
  3. Enroll in the free credit monitoring Prosper offered.
  4. Pull your free credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and dispute any account or inquiry you don't recognize.
