What happened

A hacker used a stolen support credential, on an account without multi-factor authentication, to export student and teacher records from PowerSchool's school information system in December 2024. Data varied by district but included names, contact details, birth dates, grades and, for some, Social Security numbers and medical notes. PowerSchool did not confirm a total; reports put it near 62 million students and 9.5 million teachers across North America, and districts later received extortion threats.

What should I do?

  1. Freeze your child's credit at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion so no one can open accounts in their name.
  2. Enroll in the identity protection (minors) or credit monitoring (adults) PowerSchool offered via Experian.
  3. Freeze your credit for free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion so no one can open new accounts in your name.
  4. Treat emails, texts and calls that mention your school or PowerSchool as suspect; don't click links or share codes, and contact the company through its official app or website.
