What happened
Home insurer Hippo said unknown actors abused its online auto insurance quote tool, submitting information and viewing names and driver's license numbers that the tool's pre-fill feature returned, between January 30, 2025 and August 11, 2026. Hippo spotted the activity on August 3, 2026, removed the feature and mailed notices on October 30. People can be affected even if they never dealt with Hippo. State filings counted 38,518 Texas residents and 5,132 Massachusetts residents; no national total has been published. Hippo is offering 12 months of IDX credit monitoring.
What should I do?
- Enroll in the free IDX identity protection using the code in your letter before the January 30, 2027 deadline.
- Contact your state's DMV or driver licensing agency if you suspect your driver's license number is being misused, and ask about a replacement number.
- Place a free credit freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion so criminals can't open credit in your name.
- Watch for unemployment, insurance or loan applications you didn't make, a common use of stolen driver's license numbers.
