What happened
Florida's motor vehicle agency (FLHSMV) said a malicious actor used compromised credentials to access department records on September 4, 2026. The agency said the login belonged to a single Plant City Police Department user and had been stored improperly on that employee's personal device; the ShinyHunters group had claimed it took more than 200,000 records from the state's DAVID driver database, a figure the state has not confirmed. In an October 16 notice, FLHSMV said the data potentially affected includes driver license and motor vehicle data, document images and other personal information, and that it has no evidence of misuse. The agency has not said how many people are affected. It is mailing letters to current license and ID card holders and offering one year of free identity and credit monitoring through Sontiq (TransUnion) with $1 million in identity theft insurance.
What should I do?
- If you get an FLHSMV letter, enroll in the free Sontiq monitoring it offers.
- If you no longer live in Florida or didn't get a letter, contact FLHSMV (customerinquiry@flhsmv.gov) to ask whether your record was involved.
- Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, as FLHSMV recommends.
- Watch for scam texts or calls about tolls, tickets or DMV fees that use your real license details.
