What happened

Houston-based utility CenterPoint Energy told the SEC on September 14, 2026 that an unauthorized third party obtained personal information about a portion of its customers through one of its external-facing systems. It learned of the breach from an online post by a hacker who claimed to have pulled 7.49 million customer records through an unprotected API; that figure is the hacker's claim. In October, CenterPoint reported to the Texas Attorney General that 1,062,060 Texas residents were affected, with names, addresses, Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers involved. CenterPoint also serves customers in Indiana, Minnesota and Ohio, and the total number affected has not been published. Electric and gas service was not disrupted.

What should I do?

  1. Watch for a CenterPoint notice letter and enroll in any credit monitoring it offers.
  2. Place a credit freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, since Social Security and driver's license numbers were involved.
  3. Be suspicious of calls, texts or emails claiming to be CenterPoint that threaten a shutoff or ask for payment; call the number on your bill instead.
  4. Check your credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com for accounts you didn't open.
