What happened
South African mobile operator Cell C told customers of its internet service subsidiary Cell C Fiber that a third-party service provider supporting part of its customer environment reported a cybersecurity incident on September 9, 2026. The provider said its access credentials were breached and some customer records were accessed. Cell C says the affected records were limited to customer names, email addresses, mobile numbers and Cell C customer account numbers, and that the incident did not start in its own systems. The provider has not been named, Cell C says it is unrelated to the RelyComply incident reported the same week, and no count has been given.
What should I do?
- Be careful with calls, SMSes and emails that quote your Cell C account number, and do not share OTPs, passwords or banking details with callers claiming to be from Cell C.
- Ask Cell C to add a PIN or password to your account so a SIM swap or account change needs extra verification.
- Check bills and account notifications for changes you did not make.
