What happened
Robo-adviser Betterment said a social-engineering attack on January 9, 2026 gave criminals access to third-party tools it uses for marketing and customer communications, which they used to send fake crypto 'investment' messages to customers. Have I Been Pwned later counted about 1.4 million unique emails, with names, locations and, for some, addresses, phone numbers and birth dates. Betterment said investment accounts, passwords and logins were not compromised.
What should I do?
- Never send crypto in response to a 'Betterment' offer; Betterment does not ask customers to send funds to a wallet.
- Treat emails, texts and calls that mention Betterment as suspect; don't click links or share codes, and contact the company through its official app or website.
- Turn on two-step verification in your Betterment account and review linked bank accounts.
