AT&T data breach
Was I affected?
AT&T confirmed a breach affecting about 73 million people, exposing names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and addresses. You are likely in scope if you were an AT&T customer around 2019 or earlier and received an AT&T email or letter about the 2024 data set release or a passcode reset.

What happened
A data set covering about 73 million current and former AT&T account holders (roughly 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former) was released on a hacking forum in March 2024. AT&T confirmed the records were tied to its customers and said they included names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and, for many people, Social Security numbers and account passcodes. The company reset passcodes for affected current customers and said it could not yet tell whether the data came from its own systems or a vendor.
What should I do?
- Freeze your credit for free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion so no one can open new accounts in your name.
- Request an IRS Identity Protection PIN so nobody can file a tax return with your Social Security number.
- Set a new AT&T account passcode and add a wireless account PIN to block SIM-swap and port-out fraud.
- Pull your free credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and dispute any account or inquiry you don't recognize.
Is there a settlement?
AT&T $177 million settlement (about $149M for this data set and $28M for the 2024 call-records breach); the claim deadline was December 18, 2025, so new claims are closed.
