What happened

Germany's AfD party confirmed on October 20, 2026 that a hosting provider it uses was hacked in September and that parts of 'a few' email mailboxes, most unused for years, were copied; it says current federal mailboxes were not affected. A website then published an index of what it said were about 421,000 AfD emails, and Bild reported the material included ID card photos of some members, bank statements, membership applications and local membership lists. Have I Been Pwned added the data on October 27, listing more than 345,000 unique email addresses and email messages, and flagged it as a sensitive breach. The party says it informed mailbox owners and the data protection commissioner.

What should I do?

  1. Check privately at haveibeenpwned.com (sign-in required, since this breach is marked sensitive) whether your address is included.
  2. Expect targeted emails or messages that reference political contact with the party, and do not open unexpected attachments or links.
  3. If you sent ID copies or bank details to the party by email, watch your bank account and be alert to identity misuse.
  4. You can ask the party, or the Berlin data protection authority, what data about you was involved.
