What happened

Home-security company ADT confirmed a breach it detected on April 20, 2026 after ShinyHunters listed it for extortion and later leaked the data. ADT said the information was mostly names, phone numbers and addresses, and in a small share of cases dates of birth and the last four digits of SSNs or tax IDs; Have I Been Pwned counted about 5.5 million unique emails. ADT said payment data and alarm systems were not affected.

What should I do?

  1. Be wary of door-to-door or phone 'ADT technicians' offering upgrades; verify with ADT's official number before letting anyone in.
  2. Treat emails, texts and calls that mention ADT, alarm monitoring or billing as suspect; don't click links or share codes, and contact the company through its official app or website.
  3. Freeze your credit for free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion so no one can open new accounts in your name.
